Our Learning Environment

In Darwins we have exciting areas for the children to explore. Take a look at our learning environment and see what areas we have got within our classroom.

Writing Area

The writing area has baskets filled with different resources to give the children a chance to explore mark making.

In this area there are:

  • Whiteboards and pens 
  • Chalkboards and chalk
  • Paper, envelopes, card templates
  • Pencils, coloured pencils, crayons
  • Magnetic letters and boards
  • Sound mats

WAGOLL  (What a good one looks like)

This is a display where the children's 'Fantastic Writing' can be displayed for the other children to see.

 

 

Water Area

The water area has two water trays and a variety of resources for the children to explore.

In this area there are:

  • Dolls
  • Sponges, baby sponges, brushes
  • Rubber ducks
  • Tea set
  • Containers and funnels
  • Fish and fishing nets
  • Sea creatures
  • Float and sinking resources 
  • Boats

Maths Area

There are lots of different resources within our maths area. There is small tubs of natural resources for counting and sorting and big baskets with games and resources which are changed regularly.

In this area there are:

  • Numbers
  • Shapes
  • Number lines
  • Tracing numbers
  • Dominoes ​​​​​​
  • Counting resources
  • Measuring resources

 

Role Play Area

This is the area where the children get a chance to play different roles with their friends.

The area is changed every half term to reflect the topic. This half term the topic is 'ourselves' in Darwins and 'People who help us' in Drakes, so we have 'Propps Hall Hospital'. The children can use their imaginations to become doctors, nurses and patients.

In this area there are:

  • Glasses
  • Dolls
  • Hospital bed
  • Bandages and slings
  • Doctors equipment
  • Computer and keyboard
  • Prescription papers and clipboards

 

Transport Area

The transport area is set up with different resources to support children in their small word play.

The children can build bridges, tunnels and ramps for the cars. They can use the paper to design their own maps and roads.

In this area there are:

  • Cars
  • Trucks
  • Trains and train tracks 
  • Wooden Blocks
  • Duplo
  • Road maps 
  • Pictures of different types of transport
  • Paper
  • Pens, pencils and crayons
  • Hard hats

Reading Corner

The Reading corner is a lovely, quiet cosy area for children to enjoy reading a book. The area is Space themed, the children can use their imagination of being in space. They can share a book with a friend, use the puppets to act out a story and cuddle a soft toy.

The book corner has information books and fiction books which are regularly changed.

In this area there is:

  • Information books
  • Fiction books
  • Topic related books
  • Puppets
  • Blankets and cushions 
  • Soft toys

Construction Area

The Construction area is set up to give children all the resources they need to build their creations.

The children have a choice of different building materials, hard hats and paper to design their creation.

In this area there is:

  • Duplo
  • Wooden Bricks
  • Lego
  • Knex
  • Cars
  • Design paper
  • Pencils

Home Corner

This area is set up just like a  home, its has all the things that children would see in their own home. The children have the chance to pretend play. In the home corner children can take on and try out roles from familiar family scenes, local community's experiences and imaginative fantasies.

In this area there is

  • Table and chairs
  • Dolls and dolls clothes
  • High chair
  • Dressing up clothes
  • Cooker
  • Microwave
  • Food
  • Plates, knives and forks
  • Tv
  • Iron and ironing board

Sand Area 

In our sand area we have lots of different materials for the children to explore and feel the different textures. Whether it is using the buckets and spades to build sandcastles or whether they are using the pirate resources to find some buried treasure. 

Outdoor Area

The children are very lucky that we have got our very own big outdoor space, for the children to develop on their gross motor skills and to also explore the world around them. We have a lovely learning pod for the children to enjoy a book or two, a large space for the use of bikes, balance bikes and scooters. There is a lovely planting area, where the children can take care of flowers and learn all about nature. The children love playing on the amazing tree house climbing frame and slide.
